Argument of Scale

  • the Universe is approximately 13.79 billion years old

  • the Universe contains approximately 200 billion trillion stars

  • life on Earth evolved approximately 3.5 billion years ago

  • homo sapiens evolved approximately 200,000 years ago

  • approximately 99.9% of all species on Earth are extinct

  • human civilization arose approximately 25,000 years ago

  • human writing was developed approximately 5,000 years ago

  • written religion arose approximately 4,000 years ago

  • there are approximately 4,000 officially recognized religions

The Argument of Scale is a simple one. If the Universe was created specifically for humans, why does so much of it have seemingly nothing to do with us? Based on the facts listed above, humans hold an objectively insignificant place against the incredible scale of the Universe. We are simply one of millions of species which have lived and died on a small rock we call the Earth, orbiting a rather average star we call the Sun. There is nothing special or significant about humans aside from our likely being the most intelligent species to have evolved on the Earth. In spite of this intelligence, humans remain mere mammals descended from primates. We are in no way transcendent or objectively special as a species.

On the other hand, there are approximately 4,000 human religions with most asserting humans have a special significance in the Universe. It is clearly impossible for all of these religions to be correct at the same time. At best, there is a single religion which is correct while the others are either misguided or deliberate fabrications. Combining this with the objective insignificance of humans against the scale of the Universe, it seems likely that none of humanity's religions are correct. The far more likely explanation is that religion was created purely by humans without the involvement of a divine being or God.
